Things to remember
- Women-centric design does not replace research, listening to lived experiences, or having a diverse project team. This is a required foundation.
- Women have diverse lived experiences and intersectional identities. Take the time to learn and understand the nuances, and continue to expand the spectrum of voices to hear from.
- This work can feel hard, confusing and complex. Allow yourself to be in the confusion.
- We cannot create what we cannot imagine. Allow yourself to dream.
- There’s no one right answer of what is “women-centric.” The definitions of holistic and women-centric continue to evolve.
- Women-centric design is a starting point, not the end all.
- Women-centric design requires time and patience. We cannot practice it without slowing down and letting go of the rapid mindset often promoted in conventional design and tech spaces.
Pay attention to team representation and our power & privilege as designers
We cannot practice women-centric design without ensuring our that our teams, those we design with and for, those we learn from represent diverse lived experiences and intersectional identities. We must acknowledge that those closest to the problem are also closest to the solution. Therefore, there must be a strong overlap between the lived experiences of those on our project and design teams with those that we want to serve.
